Luigi Baudana
Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba 2022
Piedmont Red
Serralunga with the gloves off
Serralunga is known for producing some of Barolo’s most structured, tannic and long-lived wines, which is what makes this 2022 so interesting. The Luigi Baudana Barolo Serralunga d’Alba 2022 carries impressive weight and depth, with a broad, rich feel across the palate layered with dark cherry and warm spice. The tannins are definitely there, but they are far more polished than I’d normally expect from a young Serralunga. There is plenty of power here, but the acidity keeps the wine lively and stops all that darker fruit from feeling heavy. The warm 2022 vintage clearly contributed to its early approachability, while the Vajra family’s winemaking brings a welcome level of finesse to a style that can often be pretty robust.
A big, serious Barolo that is already a joy to drink today and at around $60, it doesn’t break the bank either.
I had the pleasure of tasting this at the Zachys Fall Grand Tasting in Port Chester, New York, on October 24, 2026.
