The Feller Maximiner Weinspektakel is a great chance to taste wines you’ve never heard of, and a few famous icons, all under one roof. We came to try as wide a variety of wines as we could, so we started in the Legends room, then spent the rest of the day in the halls hunting for new producers. It was the fifteenth edition.

How it works

Fell sits in a side valley above the Mosel, a short drive from Trier. The festival runs one weekend a year, in March or April, and the Feller Maximiner Weinverein, a local winemakers’ association founded in 2012, organizes it.

Over seventy estates pour in the old school and the winemakers’ hall. A two-day pass was fifty euros a person.

Start with the Legends room

We started in the Legends room, which brings together some of the most iconic names on the Mosel. Two stood out.

  • Schloss Lieser, Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 2023. Great balance. Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of the best-known vineyards on the Mosel.
  • Haart, Domherr Riesling Spätlese 2011. Fifteen years old, which is rare on a festival table. The Haart family is the oldest winemaking family in Piesport, recorded as owning vineyards there since 1337.

Then the halls

After the Legends room, we worked our way through the Mosel’s regions, looking for off-the-beaten-path wineries we hadn’t heard of before. The best wine we tasted all day came from one of them: the Stefan Müller Niedermenniger Sonnenberg Riesling Spätlese Alte Reben 2024, from the Saar. If you want to know what made it stand out so much, read our full review.

These were some of our other highlights, including some of the most elegant, well-balanced Rieslings of the day:

  • Leo Fuchs, Der Charmeur, Pommerner Zeisel Riesling Spätlese 2024
  • Weingut Dax, Valwiger Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese 2025
  • Weingut Philipps, Ayler Kupp Riesling Spätlese 2025
  • Christoph Eifel, Apotheke Riesling Spätlese Alte Reben
  • Weingut Christopher Jung, Schweicher Annaberg Riesling Kabinett 2025
  • Kirsten, Riesling Auslese 2023
  • Von Othegraven, Kupp Riesling Auslese 2017

Not everything was Riesling. Sauerweins poured a sweet Gewürztraminer, and Weingut Zens poured an Auxerrois from Palzem.

Should you go

If you’re anywhere near the Mosel in late March, yes. It’s a great festival and well organized: you pick up your glass at the door and walk straight in. With over seventy estates, you can taste a huge variety of wines in a single day, and everyone we met was friendly and welcoming. If you enjoy trying Rieslings from a wide range of producers, it’s a great, good-value event.
